3 Categories to Support You with Meaningful Healing from Physical Pain

The month of June ushered in the most exciting news that any yoga teacher could receive during their teaching career. The opportunity to be a guest teacher for Yoga International! HECK YES the moment to share The Zestful Movement on a global platform!!!! It also meant a lot of extra physical movement to prepare for the teaching appearance which proved to be tasking on the bulging disc in my lower-neck and lower-back. So, I knew there was a great chance that I was going to need to support myself in a meaningful way to heal my physical pain should it arise again.

When it was all said and done, I did end up with an unhappy neck that journeyed down into my shoulder and arm. Instead, of being frustrated I adopted the Tangible Tools that I’ve learned over the years from my Physical Therapist, Dr. Abby Seider. Once I healed myself over the course of 3-5 days I thought it worthwhile to share these Tangible Tools with you as well, because the power of self care is important for all of you well-being! Let’s begin the sharing of knowledge shall we?

PERSPECTIVE

Why:

It’s important to remember all the reasons why the procedure and the down time is needed to help manage expectations of healing. The body will take the needed time to heal and keeping a positive outlook will definitely aid the process. Keeping a positive attitude with a forward-looking plan will help to make the overall process more enjoyable, as well as more productive for self.

Benefits:

When healing remember why you’re taking the down time needed to heal. Think about how you’ll be able to get back to meaningful activities with reduced pain and reduced discomfort. There is nothing more satisfying than feeling your best in your body. So, it’s important to keep the end goal in mind, as it does become easy to be annoyed by the process of healing.

EXPECTATIONS

Patience:

As the common saying goes… it is a virtue! It’s also the key to healing well in a timely manner. One of the best things you can do for self is follow the doctor’s orders to the exact specifics. It will help to fill the time in a productive manner. Also, it allows self to be part of process with a clear purpose, which oddly enough supports one’s patience. So, stay timely with meds, with icing/heating, with stabilization, with hydration, with good nutrition, and finally with ample, quality rest. And YES! All of the stated actions will support one’s patience too.

Support:

Support can have several meanings in the area of healing, so let’s go over them in order of significance.

  • Support the injured area by keeping it stable with a medical band or scarf. The more immobile it is, the better it can heal. It can also significantly reduce the sensation of pain from radiating to other parts of the body.
  • Lean in on your friends and family! Ask them in advanced for support so the overall time of healing can be more carefree when it comes to day to day task. Think about the times when extra support will be most needed. Before, during, or after the healing process? The more one can plan ahead with meals, home task, pet care, weekly errands etc. the better one can focus on healing without distraction, or guilt creeping in on the overall process. Remember, asking for help is one of the best things one can do for self and do note your loved ones want to help you, so give them their opportunity to shine! It’s important for them and you!!
  • The best support and most often overlooked is supporting one’s self! Think of this time as multiple days of self-care within your own home. Fill your space with the things you love. For example, your favorite scents, teas/coffees, lovely blooms, special treats, favorite books, and maybe even plan calls with loved ones that day to day life keeps you from connecting with on a regular basis. What better time to catch up on great chats in between restful naps, no?

MINDSET

Be Realistic:

Be honest about the amount of time required to heal based on the injury, because the odds are the healing time suggested is going to be all of the time truly required to heal. No need to rush or charge ahead when you’re not ready. In all honesty, doing so will only lead to a set-back creating more downtime to heal. So, stay true to the course and trust all will workout with continued, attentive care. While on the topic on honest reality, also be honest about the amount of support that will truly be needed. It’s better to over ask and find it’s not needed, than to under ask and not get the support when needed.

New Growth Opportunity:

Adopt a growth perspective. Why not take the time to expand the mind or a personal interest during this downtime? That book that’s been waiting to be read, or that documentary that’s been waiting to be watched. This is its moment and there’s no better time than now! Dive in and enjoy the pleasure of new personal growth without the guilt, because finally there’s time!

Plan Forward:

Adopt a growth perspective. Why not take the time to expand the mind or a personal interest during this downtime? That book that’s been waiting to be read, or that documentary that’s been waiting to be watched. This is its moment and there’s no better time than now! Dive in and enjoy the pleasure of new personal growth without the guilt, because finally there’s time!

When you take the time to listen to your body, it really does give you the feedback it needs to heal in an efficient manner. So pause listen and adapt to what you need to feel your best sooner than later. When you’re willing to take these steps you’ll heal quicker allowing you to get back to what you enjoy most in your life.

In my experience with guest teaching during the month of June for YI, I rediscovered my love for teaching and connecting with my students in a way that’s supportive of where they are in their physical well-being. That means slowing down, and pulling in the needed props to help movement not only be accessible, but also enjoyable again! I discovered that online teaching is a powerful way to share Supported Movement while being mindful of my own healing.

So, I will be launching my own online Zestful Collection in July of 2020 to help you keep moving with Mindful Minutes, Fluid Flows and Tangible Tools that you can practice within the privacy of your home. The ideas is to help you find a variety of ways that will help keep you feeling your best on and off the chair! Are you ready to keep being zesty with me? GREAT! Details will Launch on July 15….. stay tuned!!!
